How exciting is it to have a new baby in your lives!

It is certainly a happy, wonderful event that should be shared and celebrated, and a Naming Day Ceremony is a fantastic way to do just that.

By having a day to formally recognise the name you have bestowed on your child, you are acknowledging that they have their own identity, their own place in your family and the wider community, that they are unique and that they are special.

A Naming Day Ceremony is usually held around the time of the child’s first birthday, but it is totally up to you to decide on the right time for your family.

It is a chance to gather your loved ones together to officially ‘introduce’ your child to them all, whilst affirming in front of them your love and devotion to your baby, whilst promising to protect them, teach them and guide them through life.  It is also a chance for you to express the hopes and dreams you have for their future.

You may also wish to acknowledge ‘guardians’ or ‘special people’ in your child’s life and give them the opportunity to also affirm their intent to be there for your child now, and in the future, to help them grow and flourish.

I love Naming Day Ceremonies, and they can be structured in so many different ways.

They can involve candle lighting ceremonies, balloons, special gifts with meaning being presented to the baby, promises being made by special people, acknowledgement of siblings or other important family members or friends, readings, poems or songs.

As a celebrant my promise is to come up with a ceremony that is perfect for you and your child.
